Education leaders across the country are exploring how to harness artificial intelligence (AI)’s power to redefine what’s possible for school systems. To advance this work, Google for Education and GSV Ventures selected 24 top leaders from K-12 systems nationwide to participate in the 2023-24 Google GSV Education Innovation Fellowship. The Learning Accelerator (TLA) had the unique opportunity to support these efforts by synthesizing the Fellows’ perspectives and capturing emerging themes, from enhancing instruction to fostering equity. As a new member of TLA, I was eager to help my team dive into the Fellows’ insights and learn how these leaders play a role in shaping the future of education. While all six emerging themes align with TLA’s mission and highlight the innovative ways system leaders are leveraging technology to enhance education, throughout this blog, I’m focusing on three: building teacher capacity using AI, prioritizing inclusion and equity, and preparing for the future.

Building Teacher Capacity Using AI

Throughout the Fellowship, one of the recurring themes was how AI could be leveraged to help with administrative tasks, such as grading, which allows teachers to focus on what truly matters: student engagement and personalized learning. The Fellows found that AI can be used responsibly, and rather than replacing human connection, AI can complement it and offer tools that adapt to the needs of every student. TLA is committed to exploring how these evolving tools can enhance teacher development and support, focusing on empowering educators to leverage AI in the classroom is critical for more effective and impactful teaching practices.

Prioritizing Inclusion and Equity

It’s no surprise that inclusion and equity emerged as a critical transformational opportunity. The Fellows discovered that AI offers new opportunities to lift traditionally underrepresented voices and address systemic inequities. AI can be used as an equity tool, helping close gaps and create more inclusive learning environments.

Fellows learned that by engaging with diverse communities and auditing current systems, we can work towards a reality where AI benefits all students. 

Building an education field where every learner is provided an equitable education so every child reaches their unique potential is at the heart of TLA’s work. TLA and the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Office of Education Technology (OET) developed the EdTech Systems Guide, which aims to provide support in achieving inclusive learning environments through responsible edtech practices. It emphasizes the intentional selection, implementation, and evaluation of tools that center on the needs of historically marginalized students.

Preparing for the Future

Education is changing rapidly, and both educators and students must be equipped with the skills and mindsets needed to thrive. The Fellows revealed that preparing for the future means embracing new technologies while fostering critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving. Fellows explored ways to integrate AI tools into career pathways, allowing students to explore fields such as cybersecurity, data science, and healthcare. 

TLA is dedicated to helping school systems move beyond immediate challenges and focus on building long-term resilience by preparing future-ready students and leaders by providing resources that help educators stay ahead of these changes.

Through collaboration, we can build systems that ensure students are prepared for the future and looking forward to it. 

It’s hard to believe this synthesis was nearly eight months in the making, but I learned so much along the way. It expanded my view on educational innovation and reinforced the importance of collective learning for meaningful change. As we continue to explore AI’s possibilities, I am excited to see how these insights will shape the future of education, ensuring that students, educators, and leaders are equipped for success.
