Using Google Flights to track and save money on airfare

Google Flights allows you to track flights fares over time, giving you information and notifications to ensure you get the best fare possible for your trip.

Airfare constantly changes, and it can be difficult to know when to purchase a flight while maximizing savings. Google Flights, a free tool, allows travelers to search for flights across many airlines and identify the best flight and airfare for their trip. Users can also track airfare for individual or groups of flights, opting in for email notifications when fares increase or decrease.

How to Track Flights:

  1. Go to Google Flights.
  2. Select and input your trip locations, dates, and additional parameters.
  3. If you find a flight option that works, you can select the flight(s) and purchase either through Google or through the airline website.
  4. Tracking airfare:
    1. If you’d like to track all flight options, toggle on the “Track prices” option.
    2. If you’d like to track an individual flight option, select your desired flight (either one-way or round trip), and toggle on the “Track prices” option.
  5. Review flight history, and purchase the flight when the price is reasonable!

Considerations

  • Airfare is often cheapest on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and 2 or more months out.
  • If an airline offers flexible refunds or travel credit (e.g., Alaska Airlines, Southwest Airlines, etc.), you can rebook your flight and keep the credit for future reservations.
