This report explores how Principals can overcome obstacles to change teaching and instruction
The Center on Reinventing Public Education investigated policies that “get in the way” of principal actions to pursue personalized learning. In it, the authors find that many barriers are imaginary- leaders can find workarounds to drive change.
In this paper, authors from CRPE investigated barriers principals say get in the way of making the decisions they think will most benefit students to organize in new ways and attempt to provide students with a more personalized learning experience. Only about a third of barriers cited were “real,” whereas the other two-thirds were imagined – meaning they can be surmounted. In this paper, the authors discuss these barriers and offer examples of how they can be overcome – either by school leaders directly or through change at the district and state levels.
